Maguri-Racatau is the largest commune in Romania, located in a mountain region of the county of Cluj. Until 2004, this mountain settlement held another record: many of its secondary school children spent six hours a day on their way to and from school. Under these circumstances, their school results were very poor due to low school attendance and tiredness.
The year 2004 brought an important step forward for these children and their parents. The boarding school, refurbished by FRCCF, with the support of FRDS (Romanian Social Development Fund), of the Maguri-Racatau Town Hall, the Maguri-Racatau School and of JOHANNITER-UNFALL-HILFE, reopened. Around thirty children from the remote hamlets of the commune no longer have to walk lengthy distances to school.
The results of the FRCCF project were noticeable right after the boarding school's opening: children improved their school results and healthcare. Moreover, the boarding school has a central heating system, backing up the traditional stove-based heating system.
Since 2004, the Foundation has been supporting the boarding school by covering the daily food expenses for the children accommodated here and by providing tutoring for the 7th and 8th graders at Mathematics and Romanian, as well as school and vocational guidance. On holiday, they go on trips and take part in social events.
In 2005, 22 children graduated secondary school and went to schools in Cluj to learn a trade and continue their studies. This is an important step for this community whose most members have only 8 school years.
In this very first year of functioning, the boarding school took important steps towards sustainability. In the summertime, when the children are staying with their families, the building is rented to school camps organisers. The money raised this way is used for building maintenance.
